About Karma Modern Indian

Karma Modern Indian creatively reimagines classic Indian cuisine and flavors, using locally-sourced ingredients prepared with traditional and modern cooking methods. We aim to make Indian food more approachable by introducing the traditional cuisine with contemporary plating and forward-thinking flavor profiles. Favorites like naan bread, Palak paneer and Chicken Tikka are still part of the foundation of our menu, but we’ve put a modern twist on various dishes with unexpected seasonings and ingredients like truffle oil, pesto and star fruit. 

Our team of well-known Washington fixtures with A-list pedigrees have a committed passion for pushing the envelope with a mission to create an unforgettable dining experience for our guests.

Executive Chef Ajay Kumar takes Indian cuisine to the next level with unconventional menu items like octopus, duck and quinoa to the roster. Bar Director Harley Mocker complements these dishes with a list of five rotating classics cocktails as well as Indian-influenced sips – along with thoughtfully paired biodynamic wine list.

As the name “Karma” relays, we are proud to donate a portion of our sales to local and global charities that aim to help children in impoverished communities at home and around the world.

MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View

Soaring ceilings, large windows and a pleasing navy-and-white palette set a distinctly modern tone for the appropriately named Karma Modern Indian. This is a far cry from your everyday curry house as a great deal of care is taken to coax each dish with enticing flavors. Spices are ground on the premises—read about their health benefits in the thoughtful guide on the back of the menu while you wait. The chef-driven menu is at once traditional and contemporary. Lentil salad atop paper-thin cucumber slices is a visual showstopper, while turnip goat, slow cooked with a complex sauce that is equally sweet and spicy, is outstanding. Lobster masala with green and red peppers and beetroot poriyal display the kitchen's dedication to an old-meets-new sensibility.
